#SONG I SURRENDER ALL TO YOU WITHHOLDING NOTHING FREE#
How can you ever loosen the ropes when your hands are tightly closed? You can’t even attempt to free yourself. Not only can’t we receive anything God may have planned for us, but we also place ourselves in voluntary bondage. I knew that was the right picture of what happens to us when we withhold things from the influence of the Lord. But the picture that struck me was not just one with hands closed, but the one with closed and bound hands. This time my key words were pictures of hands closed. Can you give it over to Him?īecause I love illustration, I am always searching for a picture for my post. Matthew 16:24 says, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” He would never ask us to surrender anything that is necessary for the next level. For God to fully use us and take us to the next level, requires a different level of self-denial and commitment. No amount of praise and worship or word from the pulpit can change what you won’t change in your private world. We go to church looking for some emotional move from God, but the truth is we’re becoming numb to Him and His presence. The tighter we hold on to these things, the number we become. That is a natural example of what happens in our spirits. If you’ve ever clasped your hands real tight and held that position, eventually your fingers and hands start to ache and go numb. It’s a cyclical relationship where you give and He in turn is able to give you. If you look at the picture illustration, how can you receive anything with your hands closed? As we open our hands or ourselves to God and give over whatever we value so much, He then is able to give back to us.

The truth being is that when we clasp our hands tightly over these things, we miss out on what God has specifically for us. Although we don’t say it out of our mouths, our actions say, “You can have all of that Lord, except for this one little thing.” It may even be that God has called us to give up some negative attitudes or behaviors, some fears, worries, or doubts and wholly lean on Him. Sunday after Sunday some church in Anywhere, USA is singing “I surrender all.” Except for THIS! To be honest we stand hands closed fearful that the loss of this thing will turn our lives upside down. That is how many of us can be with our Father. You go to find them and there they are hands clasped shut when you ask, “What do you have there?” It’s funny because they sometimes will refuse to open their hands out of fear that their little treasure will be snatched away by the mean old parent. It’s the kind of silence that is loud to mommy ears. Have you ever been in the presence of an exploring two year old? They’re usually quiet when they’ve found some treasure. The areas that you can hear Him say, “Give that to Me.”, but you stand arms folded or hands closed refusing to surrender it over. That no matter how much you want to be all in, there’s still these little areas that you have tucked away with a nice little lock and key. I was singing the words over and over when finally I heard myself, “Withholding nothing, withholding nothing, I surrender all to You!” It was one of those moments that brings tears to your eyes as you realize that you are falling short in an area of your growth. I think I replayed it about three times, trying to catch the transitions, the notes, the little nuances of the song itself. I was so focused on learning the words that the meaning was lost on me. This is what occurred to me this past week when I was given a song to learn. Have you ever been listening to a song, but not truly listening? Then at one moment you hear clearly the lyrics and they penetrate your mind and soul. Closed hands aren’t in a position to receive and eventually causes us to enter into bondage.
